The Mt Tabor neighborhood in Southeast Portland is named for the volcano that is now extinct and serves as Mount Tabor park and recreational area. The volcanic cone is the landmark of the neighborhood and has a sweeping view of downtown Portland.

Mt Tabor neighborhood area lies between E Burnside St and Division St, and goes from SE 49th Ave to SE 76th Ave. It is comprised of a mixture of older, smaller homes and historic mansions that have been built to stand out and take advantage of the city view. Total number of households is 4,316; home values in Mt Tabor neighborhood are between $200 and $900k.

Bordering neighborhoods are Laurelhurst and Richmond to the west, Montavilla to the east, North and South Tabor as the name suggests.

Mount Tabor Park and historic district

The neighborhood is most famous for the 196 acre park, which was not originally a city park, but farmland, becoming a park later on, after 1905. The entire area was listed on the central register for the historic society back in 2004. Mt Tabor park is also the site of 3 water reservoirs, which were added to the register of historic places in 2004 as well.

This park is one of the most used by residents of Portland. As you enter you take immediate notice of the water reservoirs, which are home to the largest supply of drinking water for those residents of Portland. The water is supplied by the Bull Run Reservoir in the Cascade Mountains. The park offers trails and bike paths, as well as good number of playgrounds, picnic areas and wood benches for resting.

The city area d here marks the eastern end of Hawthorne Blvd and Belmont St, both lined up with various shops, cafes and restaurants. The 2 streets come to an end at the Mount Tabor park and the homes become more imposing as they are built higher up on the hill.

The neighborhood of Mt Tabor goes back a long ways, to 1848, when Rev. Clinton Kelly settled here on the east side of the Willamette river. He settled mainly to the west and south of this area, but his family quickly took claim of the entire area. The price he paid to claim the area was $50 and that is all he spent to begin farming here.

Mt Tabor neighborhood homeThe single family residences which the neighborhood consist of are homes built in the 1900’s. The homes here consist of bungalows, colonials and even English cottages. There are a number of different Tudors and modern homes that were built later, as well.

Mt Tabor schools, libraries, quality of life, people - stats & reports

If you are interested in learning more about the public or private schools in the area, please visit our Portland schools page. The elementary schools are Glencoe and Richmond, Mt Tabor for Middle School. The public high school classes are provided at the Franklin High School.

There is no public library in the immediate vicinity, but there are two locations that are close by, including the Belmont Library and the Woodstock Library.

Activities and the Hawthorne Business District

Fitness, running, hiking and yoga classes are some of the activities that Mt Tabor residents enjoy. They can work with a personal trainer or lifestyle coaches or just meet like-minded people in the park, take time off from their busy week and exercise, stretch or strength training.

Other activities in the area include walking the streets and enjoying the architecture, shopping in the nearby Hawthorne district or just sitting outdoors at a coffeehouse or brewpub.

The Hawthorne Business District is made up of a sizeable number of shops that are mostly owned by local residents of Portland. The district is made up of 20 or so blocks and comes to an end near the west side of the Tabor neighborhood. The Fred Meyer Superstore, which is one of the bigger chain options, is located in the area as well.

If you are interested in public transportation in the neighborhood, there are a number of buses which serve the area. The buses have routes that will take you and guests to the downtown area and run north and south, as well as east to west. There are 5 bus routes that cross this neighborhood in SE Portland.

If you need to commute to downtown Portland, the trip should only take from 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the departure area and your destination in downtown. This is pretty reasonable, considering that in other larger cities in the country it could take much longer to get to work.

Mt Tabor restaurants, coffee shops and breweries

Places to eat, have a drink or a cup of coffee are abundant in the Mt Tabor neighborhood. One of the restaurants that people talk about is 'Three Doors Down', another recommended option is the 'Bread and Ink'. If you are looking for something a bit more exquisite, you may want to visit the 'Cup and Saucer' or 'Chez Machin Creperie'.

At Bridgeport Brewing you can enjoy one of the famous local brews. Most of the restaurants in the area will also serve a variety of brews, local and national. If you're looking for a place for the entire family there are several pizza shops, family dinners and barbeque places to choose from.
