This Month's House is...

House in the Clouds

The “House in the Clouds” in Thorpeness, Suffolk, is a famous landmark in the area.
Built by Braithwaite Engineering Company of London in 1923, it was constructed with the purpose of supplying water to the village of Thorpeness. Its water tank had a capacity of 50,000 gallons. The water tower was deemed an eyesore and was disguised as a house by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie and architect F. Forbes Glennie.

During the Second World War, the House in the Clouds was hit by gunfire from anti-aircraft guns based at Thorpeness. The water tank was repaired using its own steel, which resulted in a reduced capacity of 30,000 imperial gallons.

In 1977 the water tower was made redundant by a mains water supply to the village, and additional living space was created. In 1979 the main water tank was removed to fully convert the building into a house.

The building currently has five bedrooms and three bathrooms; it contains a total of 68 steps from top to bottom and is around 70ft high.

Quick update: for the past few weeks I've spent some time working on my website, MapPortlandHomesForSale.com. Part of this work was building searches for various criteria, such as price ranges, square footage, age and neighborhoods. You can find the results for these searches in the Additional Links area on the main page.

Two of the searches I'm most excited about are for Best Value homes, Portland East of I-5 and West Portland (incl. Beaverton and Hillsboro). The homes are listed by dollars/sq.ft. and start
from the low 70s for the East side and from the low 80s for the West. Hard to believe there are decent homes available at such low prices/sq.ft... see the results for yourself (almost forgot, all homes are 2005 or newer!!).

This month's report on inventory and sales trends from the Multiple Listing Service is also available. If you like graphs and in-depth Real Estate information you can find it all in the Portland Market Action section.

Hope you'll enjoy this month's house and it's story. Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help you or your family and friends in finding a new home or selling the current one.

Yours in Real Estate,
